SAMHAIN

Samhain is the start of the old Celtic year. Its meaning is literally "summers end". As one of the four cross quarter festivals, it is a seasonally celebrated one, not fixed in the way the solar festivals are. And as a result of this seasonal observance, would have been celebrated when the first frost was experienced.
It marks the end of the samos half of the year, the bright half, and heralds in the giamos half. It was the most important of the eight festivals celebrated annually by the Celts, marking the beginning of a whole new cycle.
